Nuclear Power Plant

Nowadays, the usage of nuclear power is developing rapidly. Many people consider that the usage of nuclear power is more efficient because from a little source we can get a huge production of energy. More than thirty of all the productive countries, such as England, Russia, Japan, United States, France, etc., use nuclear power as their energy source of everything. Nuclear power can be used for explosive substance and it also can be used for energy source of electricity. The rapid development in Indonesia brings enormous demand of electricity, and this condition makes the government plan to build a nuclear power plant. In my opinion, building a nuclear power plant is not needed yet in Indonesia for three reasons: Nuclear is a risky energy resource, Indonesia doesn’t have enough human resources for nuclear project, and Indonesia has many energy resources that can be used besides nuclear power.

First, nuclear is a risky energy resource. Using nuclear power needs a structural planning. The planner has to give a great attention for every detail in using nuclear power, especially for the safety. A story about nuclear disaster that had destroyed Soviet Union and Japan can be a good lesson for our country which is planning for making a nuclear power plant. Despite the fact that they have a high accuracy of planning and doing something, Soviet Union and Japan got nuclear disaster because of their carelessness. Soviet Union in 1986 had a nuclear disaster which mostly known as Chernobyl Catastrophe. The disaster began when a sudden power output surge, and when an emergency shutdown was attempted, a more extreme spike in power output occurred, which led to a reactor vessel rupture and a series of explosions. These events exposed the graphite moderator of the reactor to air, causing it to ignite. As the result, the reactor exploded and poisoned over large parts of the western Soviet Union and Europe. From 1986 to 2000, about 350.400 people were evacuated and resettled from the most severely contaminated areas of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. The accident raised concerns about the safety of the Soviet nuclear power industry. Recently, similar case happened in Japan, but in lower intensity. Besides safety problem, another risky problem is nuclear waste which will give drawbacks for our environment cleanliness. During the operation of nuclear power plants, radioactive waste is produced. Radioactive is very dangerous and can cause gross mutation. This waste not only can radiate radioactivity but also difficult to be decomposed. It is very risky for our environment, especially for our next generation.

Second, Indonesia doesn’t have enough human resources for nuclear power project. According to Mr. P. Prayono, the chairman of association of oil and gas, the number of nuclear scientist in Indonesia is still about three thousand scientists, or only about 0,14 % of total population in Indonesia, and Indonesia has only about 100 professors of nuclear sector. Moreover, Nuclear field can be found only in several famous university in Indonesia, such as Gajah Mada University and Bandung Technology Institute, where only located in Java Island. Indonesia also has only one Nuclear College which develop under BATAN (Badan Tenaga Nuklir Nasional) or National Nuclear Energy Association where located in Yogyakarta, still in Java. Nuclear field has only a few people who is interested, as a consequence, Indonesia doesn’t enough human resources for nuclear power project.

Third, Indonesia has many energy resources that can be used besides nuclear power. The main reason why the government wants to make nuclear power plant is that nuclear can be a good alternative energy. However, nuclear power is not the only choice. There are many choices of alternative energy that we can choose to be the next energy resources. Moreover, Indonesia is one of the richest countries of biodiversity in the world. The utilization of alternative energy in Indonesia, such as geo-thermal, wind, and solar, is prospective. Indonesia have many volcanoes whose geothermal can be used to supply the national electric demand. Indonesia can also make Solar power plants whose substance is taken from our abundant resources, the sunlight. The development of hydroelectric power plants, steam power plants, diesel power plants, and gas power plants, which have built first, is a good pace and a great progress for Indonesia. Nevertheless, it will be better to develop them not only in Java and its environs but also in many others area outside Java.

Therefore, building a nuclear power plant is not needed yet in Indonesia because nuclear is a risky energy resource, Indonesia doesn’t have enough human resources for nuclear project, and Indonesia has many energy resources that can be used besides nuclear power. We have to maximize the use of our power plant and try to find other alternative energy except nuclear, and nuclear should be the last choice of using energy alternative.
